CALL FOR PAPERS - NEW DESIGN JOURNAL

Call for Papers -- She Ji. The Journal of Design, Economics, and Innovation

She Ji is a peer-reviewed, trans-disciplinary design journal published by Elsevier in collaboration with Tongji University and Tongji University Press. The first issue will appear in September 2015. She Ji focuses on economics and innovation, design process, and design thinking. Our mission is to enable design innovation in industry, business, non-profit services, and government through economic and social value creation. Innovation requires integrating ideas, economics, and technology to create new knowledge at the intersection of different fields. She Ji provides a unique forum for this interdisciplinary inquiry.

She Ji addresses how societies, organizations, and individuals create, build, distribute, use, and enjoy goods and services, with an added focus on strategy and management. The journal also explores the way that organisations increasingly use design thinking to achieve organisational goals, and the journal examines how design thinking can inform wider social, managerial, and intellectual discourses.

She Ji also publishes articles in research methods and methodology, philosophy, and philosophy of science to support the core journal
area.

She Ji invites papers on topics within our remit. Articles of interest might cover such issues as:

– Design-driven innovation for social and economic change
– Design practices in management, consulting, and public service
– Alternative economies and industrial transformation
– Design for smart and sustainable living
– Latest design theories
– Methods and methodologies for design research
– Design for social innovation, organisational change, and education
– Design, computation, and algorithms
– Cultural aspects of design and innovation
– Philosophy of design
– Philosophy of science in design research

Designing for Sustainability

"Lifecycle Management Strategies: Designing Products for Sustainability and Profitability"

Learn how Going Green is the answer for your company's future profitability and efficiency.

A number of external pressures are making Going Green a top concern for manufacturing executives.

Globally, governments are exerting pressure on businesses to do more in reducing the negative impact their operations have on the environment.

Along with that, businesses are feeling the pressure from the physical world as well.

Even if it is possible for these companies to ignore the impact their operations have on such things as carbon emissions, there is no way they can ignore the shortages of natural resources.

A shortage of resources that go into your products, or are necessary to make or move your products, is a direct threat to the success of your business.

To learn more, download this executive brief inside, you will find information in regard to issues such as:
  • What is Green and Why Go Green Now?
  • Lean Materials Management
  • Modeling the environmental impact of your product
  • Reducing your carbon footprint

Welcome to the second issue of Zygote Quarterly.

"Our lead article explains how Eiji Nakatsu, a bird watching engineer, improved the design of the Japanese Bullet Train by studying the owl and the kingfisher.

We learn next about a designer in our ongoing interview of practicing professionals: Tom Knittel of the architectural firm HOK.

Finally, we get two expert perspectives on R. Buckminster Fuller and his study of nature from Jay Baldwin and Curt McNamara.

We have added three new regular sections to our format: “portfolio”, “opinion” and “tools”.

Our portfolio feature will present visually inspiring work of professionals in all disciplines.

We are pleased to showcase the beautiful and informative images of scientist/artist David Goodsell.

Our guest opinion page is intended to provide a platform for different opinions that will spark reasoned debate.

This issue includes a provocative critique of popular biomimicry beliefs by Nikolay Bogatyrev.

Our tools section introduces an engineering-to-biology thesaurus, a tool in progress by professor Jacquelyn Nagel.

Call for papers: Design in contemporary Japan

The Design Journal  ('Dezain no genjo: Design in contemporary Japan')

CALL FOR PAPERS - Deadline: 29 August 2012

Few nations have seen the public image of their design and manufacturing sector change so quickly and drastically as Japan since 2000.

Postwar Japan's manufacturing-intensive economy and promotion of private consumption fostered the development of design industries - product, fashion, graphic, vehicle, textile, furniture, etc. - as integral to product development and promotion.

After 1990, these now-established design industries faced new conditions such as decreasing domestic spending, offshore manufacturing, domestic disasters and the influx of digital technology.

Today, as 'minimalist good design' and 'kawaii' continue to dominate perceptions of the nation's products and aesthetic worldwide, general and industry media alike regularly report on Japan's decline vis-a-vis the rise of Korea and China as emerging leaders in electronics and other key industries.

The manufacturing sector's troubles - related also to the 3.11 disaster, subsequent power disruptions, the high yen, lowered domestic consumption and a somber mood nationally -
have only added to the challenges facing designers, both independent firms and in-house design divisions.

Against this difficult terrain for some established design areas, however, Japanese fashion retains its global cachet amongst consumers of high-end and street fashion alike. And newer design industries such as game, service and interaction design continue to take advantage of digitisation, the global popularity of anime and manga and design's increased draw for business and policy to shape digital and physical experience in new ways.

This special issue of The Design Journal will explore the current state of key design disciplines and industries in Japan today, and investigate potential next steps and directions that they might take. It invites proposals that identify and critically analyse the present and future of particular industries or issues, both established and emerging. Submissions that map the impact of recent change on design industries and identify strategies developed by actors for adapting, even thriving, in new circumstances, are particularly welcome.

Discussion and movements in Design Research

Abstract

The main approach of this paper is to look at design research from a systems-oriented

perspective. This implies that design research is understood as a dynamic and emergent field

of interrelated or contradicting thoughts, concepts and ideas.

Image from Mena Design Research
The first three sections of this paper draw cross-sections into the emerging richness in design research as it matures as a genuine mode of knowledge production.
They address some of the positions, concepts, and discussions going on in the field, arguing that practice research in design is the most central.

The current state is discussed and the relation between design research and other modes of

knowledge production are looked at.
A main tendency seems to be that design research is moving towards greater complexity both in issues and approaches and that Research by Design is becoming ever more central.
