International E-Waste Design Competition
Ever wonder what happens to your electronic waste?
That old computer or cell phone you discarded?Do you want new electronics in 10 to 20 years?
If so, here is your chance to do something about it by creating innovative new uses for existing electronic waste, as well as its future prevention.
Electronic waste, or "e-waste," generated by computers, TVs, cameras, printers, and cell phones, is a growing global issue.
Through the Third International E-Waste Design Competition, participants are asked to explore solutions to both remediate the existing e-waste problem and prevent e-waste generation in the future.
The spirit of this competition is to prompt the industrialized world to dialogue about product designs for environmentally responsible green computing and entertainment.
The spirit of this competition is to prompt the industrialized world to dialogue about product designs for environmentally responsible green computing and entertainment.
The goals of this competition are to learn about ways to reuse e-waste for new and productive means, explore your own ideas for how to address e-waste problems and contribute to the body of knowledge that advances the practice of environmentally responsible product design for current and future computing technology products.
We invite you to create a broad range of design concepts and innovations for technology products that demonstrate fresh approaches and responsible solutions for green computing technologies.
Engineering, design, sustainability, or business knowledge will be helpful but not required for success in this competition.

Design and Nature / Buckminster Fuller - Zygote Quarterly
"Our lead article explains how Eiji Nakatsu, a bird watching engineer, improved the design of the Japanese Bullet Train by studying the owl and the kingfisher.
We learn next about a designer in our ongoing interview of practicing professionals: Tom Knittel of the architectural firm HOK.
Finally, we get two expert perspectives on R. Buckminster Fuller and his study of nature from Jay Baldwin and Curt McNamara.
We have added three new regular sections to our format: “portfolio”, “opinion” and “tools”.
Our portfolio feature will present visually inspiring work of professionals in all disciplines.
We are pleased to showcase the beautiful and informative images of scientist/artist David Goodsell.
Our guest opinion page is intended to provide a platform for different opinions that will spark reasoned debate.
This issue includes a provocative critique of popular biomimicry beliefs by Nikolay Bogatyrev.
Our tools section introduces an engineering-to-biology thesaurus, a tool in progress by professor Jacquelyn Nagel.

WikiHouse - Open Source Construction
WikiHouse is an open source construction set.
It's aim is to allow anyone to design, download, and 'print' CNC-milled houses and components, which can be assembled with minimal formal skill or training.

Sustainable Design - A Critical Guide
"The fact that we live in a closed system with limited and dwindling resources is something many of us prefer, or choose, not to think about. But this concept of finite planet should be seen as an opportunity for designers to implement impactful, forward-thinking, and broad-reaching change. In this spirit of “eco-optimism,” Sustainable Design: A Critical Guidenavigates the array of issues related to sustainability in clear and helpful terms.
Written for students and professionals, this books presents a concise and well-illustrated overview of the most important techniques available for reducing energy footprints, along with the professional context for their use. In addition to tackling the discipline’s ethical responsibility, each chapter takes on specific considerations such as rainwater harvesting, gray-water recycling, passive heating techniques, green roofs, wind energy, daylighting, indoor air quality, material evaluation, and green building certification programs. Founded in the three Rs of environmentalism—reduce, reuse, and recycle—Sustainable Designencompasses a critical fourth: rethink.
Chapters:
1. Ecodesign: What and Why
2. Site Issues
3. Water Efficiency
4. Energy Efficiency: Passive Techniques
5. Energy Efficiency: Active Techniques
6. Indoor Environmental Quality
7. Materials
8. Labels and Ratings: Measuring Ecodesign
9. The Future of Sustainable Design

Navigating the Product Mindset
Global perceptions were collected from consumers and manufacturers in China, India, Germany, and the U.S. across industries in high tech, food, building materials, and household chemicals.
"UL has worked closely with manufacturers around the globe to help them bring safer products to market faster for more than 117 years," said Keith Williams, UL's chief executive. "Today we live in a more interconnected and interdependent world than ever before. With supply chain complexity growing and global trade increasing at unprecedented rates, understanding and navigating the Product Mindset is essential."
Key insights from the study include:
"UL has worked closely with manufacturers around the globe to help them bring safer products to market faster for more than 117 years," said Keith Williams, UL's chief executive. "Today we live in a more interconnected and interdependent world than ever before. With supply chain complexity growing and global trade increasing at unprecedented rates, understanding and navigating the Product Mindset is essential."
Key insights from the study include:
Geography and culture play the largest role in shaping perceptions about products.
Consumers are aware of an increasingly complex, global supply chain and have a growing interest in the traceability of products and product parts.
Manufacturers in emerging markets rate themselves as being ahead of the curve regarding both product and operational sustainability more than manufacturers in developed markets.
Few manufacturers appear to make the environment a top-tier issue when compared with safety and performance.
Product safety and performance are the top two considerations that impact today's Product Mindset for both consumers and manufacturers.
Methodology
Global quantitative research was conducted by an independent research firm during the Spring, 2011.
1,235 consumers and 1,195 manufacturers in China, Germany, India and the United States were interviewed across an array of topics related to safety, performance, innovation and sustainability.
Manufacturers were selected from the high technology, food, household chemicals and building materials sectors and were interviewed by phone. Consumers were interviewed through an online survey.

Moebius + Syd Mead - Outros futuros

Origami + Design + Engenharia
![]() |
| Origami Black Forest Cuckoo Clock, opus 182 |
- Estruturas dobraveis, colapsiveis
- Estruturas arquitetonicas colapsiveis
- Design de produtos
- Aplicações no campo do Design Social
